mariner charging problems?

cvanderweyst

Question

I have a 1982 mariner 50hp and it is not charging

I did some voltage tests on what i believe is the rectifier(because the wires leading into it go up under the flywheel)

and I get around 5v. on two of the posts and nothing on the third. The main positive posts only read 12v at the cylenoid and the battery. Any help would be appreciated.

The rectifier will have 3 posts. 2 will have yellow wires coming from the stator under the flywheel and a red going to the solenoid where it will connect to the main wire from the battery. The 2 yellow wire are AC voltage and the red is DC voltage. If you have AC voltage that rises with RPM'S on the yellows and no DC voltage coming from the red, then it sounds like the rectifier is the problem. Does it have a tachometer? Is that working?

Yeah i have power at the two yellow wire(Wich one is wore bare on the opposing terminal) and no power at the red wire.

I had my mechanic friend come over and he agreed that it was probaly a rectifier problem. No tachometer
