lack of hair on my lab

My 3 year old chocolate lab has always been very thin on her coat. Her underside shows more skin than hair. I've had her to two different vets. No diagnosis. She doesn't itch, scratch or have any sore spots. Just not enuf hair on flanks and especially underside and around her legs. She is mostly a indoor dog but we do do a lot of hunting. She wears a vest but still gets cold.
Any ideas??

My chocolate lab had the same problem, he had low thyroid so we have had him on thyroxin for about four years now to get and keep his thyroid level where it should be. have your vet check its blood work for this.

There is a good chance it is due to breeding if he has always been on the thin side.

Unfortunatley field bred labs are not bred to meet breed standards as far as height, weight, bite and COAT. A lot of field trial and other field bred labs lack a dual coat, which consists of the "downy" undercoat, covered by a longer, coarser guard coat. A good share of them only have the guard coat, which doesn't have much insulating factor. It would be great if meeting these breed standards had as much priority as field ability, hips, eyes, elbows etc. There was a reason why the lab was bred down they way they were, and to disolve it over a couple generations of indiscriminate breeding is a shame. And no I am not a show person, but I feel that meeting the criteria of what a lab truley is, is as important as all the other traits we look at. Unfortunatley in the show lines the reverse is true... they meet the breed standards (you'll never see a bad coat on a show dog) but their field ability is lacking or non-existant. We need to get back to breeding labs like they were 40-50 years ago... Not just the one dimensional dogs we routinely see...
