Dry Fly Help

Big Hit

Recommended Posts

I've got an opprotunity to buy/pick through a bunch of dry flies from a guy who is "giving up" fly fishing. (Too bad for him). I'm new to fly fishing. I put up a post a couple months ago about which flies a newbie should get. As it stands, I've got some BWOs and Adams which I've had luck with the last few weeks. I've also got some Elk Hair Caddis flies.

2 questions 1) when should I start fishing the Elk Hairs and 2) what are some other flies I should look for when sorting through these flies I have an opprotunity to buy? Any suggestions would be greatly helpful.

You didn't mention where you will be doing most of your fishing, but here's some MN/WI staples. Light and dark hendricksons, sulfur/pale dun, march brown, blue dun, slow water caddis. Search patterns you may also want to consider are the royal coachman and the stimulators. Also, dry fly fishing isn't complete without mentioning terrestrials, like Dave's hopper and black beetles. Hope this helps.
