Low compression on 15hp Kohler lawn tractor engine

Last fall my law tractor went up in a big puff of blue smoke and would not stay running after that. I found yesterday that it leaked a bunch of oil out of the exhaust over the winter. I checked the compression and it's only around 80psi. A few people said that is low so I started tearing down the engine. Over head valves looked fine with just looking at them, not sure what I am really looking at though. I pulled the head and am not really sure what I am looking at there, but it looks like I have to pull the whole engine apart to get the piston out so I can inspect the rings which I am suspecting are bad?

Any thoughts on something I may be missing on the general issue?

If the rings are bad is something like this even worth fixing, vs tring to find a new engine?
