north shore

I am from the metro and have a few friends that go to school at UMD. Over easter weekend about 4 or 5 of us plan to go up along the north shore to try our hand at fly fishing for trout. None of us have ever caught anything besides panfish on our fly rides and don't really know where or how to start. Is there any advidee as to which streams, or what type of stream would be the best place to start? We will be staying in Duluth probably and don't want to run all the way up each day, but might make a long run one of the days. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A little after easter or so...the rainbows come up to the streams. Catch them at the right time and the'll be everywhere! I'd say...stay at the lester. There are a few good pools and plenty of current. 4 to 5 guys will be a good amount of you. The rivers are pretty small. I only go with 1 other person or just myself. Stop by the shop up there to ask questions. There are LOTS of guys that know their stuff there. GL and have fun.

Two spot's to go to.The lester is fine,Only if you get there early!LOT'S OF GUY'S!!!I whould go to the sucker river first,Easy to sight fish.If you want to get away from guy's,I'd go to the babtisim.Much More river to fish. Most of all,Stop at the bait shop. And do some studing on fishing steelhead!A 8to9 wheight rod with 6to10 pound line will work just fine.

Very true. By 5ish.....if you're not at your spot...you may be out of luck. These guys take it serious. The Baptism is a great river....just a longer drive out. Sucker is also a great river...but there will prob be guys on it too.

I second the early rise. You should be pulling on your waders before dawn on some of the more popular streams. During Easter you probably wont be throwin' line, more of a drift and steelhead approach. Call John at the Great Lakes Fly Company, or Superior Fly Anglers. Yarn flies, spawn, bugs, crawlers, be prepared for it all. It's not your typical trout fishing as rivers can be swollen and fast.

I went to a LSSA seminar last night, and the guys were saying the fish start running up the rivers when the water temp is around 33-34 degrees. I don't know if i can believe this...that seems way too cold, and even if the fish WERE in the rivers at this time i would imagine they aren't to fixated on eating anything. any thoughts?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
