i also think scent control is important bu ti dont go tho the extent that perch explained
i stay high in the tree, thats it. i have smoked from my stand with no problem. i dont use the soaps and carbon cloths either. a few drops of doe urine on my boots and off my stand thats it
i know guys who hunt without scent on the ground and no special cloths and been within 15 yard of deer
i guess its all personal preferance. it what works for you. thats what worked and works for me so im stickin with it.

addict:
hey. check out the "questions about bowhunting" thread. it has many good points of fact for you.
my opinion on scent and cover is this:

1. make sure you have a scentless soap/shampoo designed for bow hunters. h.s. scents makes a good one. use this before each trip to the woods. dress light and keep your warm clothes in a pack, so you dont work up a sweat on your way to the stand.

2. h.s. also makes some good "scent eliminator" spray. hit your boots, pants, clothes with this each time you hit the woods. put on hands/face/head as well. as far as cover scents, i don't use a spray on. snip a couple pine branches/needles and put in your pocket. "wash" your hands in the dirt/mud.

3. wash your clothes with detergent specialized for bow hunters. i run a wash cycle with just this soap (no clothes) before i do a load of my hunting clothes, to rid the washer of previous detergent odor. hang dry your gear outside (if you live out of town..), or inside when it's clean. keep these clothes in a scent free bag or plastic tote. i have a big rubbermaid bin (i scrubbed it with scent eliminator, ground in dirt, and let it sit in a couple rains before use..). also, you can throw in some leaves/pine needles/ dirt from the area you hunt. careful for moisture/mold though.

4. when in the woods, stay high in a tree with a safety harness to keep your scent above the deer. 12-15 ft up will put your scent above them. remember in the cold am, your scent will drift down, until the sun comes up, and warms thing up a bit.

5. i don't put too much stock into charcoal or scent blocker gear. but i'm sure it can't hurt, only your wallet.

6. don't smoke, and try not to fart!

that's about all i can offer. good luck! and remember to read that other post. lot's of good tips.

From what I've read on the scent lock clothing, I'd say it's unnecessary. I think the more you play the wind & the more you take care of your scent the more deer you'll see & the more consistently you'll see deer. I'm sure a person could smoke on stand & still see deer, certainly if there's 10 mph of wind or more & the deer come from the way you're expecting. It's pretty hard to know if a deer 200-300 yards away from you in the woods downwind of you smells you & just doesn't come your way. If you can't see them or hear them you wouldn't ever know they were there.

I try to vary the scent I use especially if I'm hunting the same stand or general area a lot. Sometimes I'll use coon urine, they're everywhere, sometimes doe pee, & sometimes none. If you get too much scent or there's always more of a certain animal scent when you're hunting I think deer can figure that out. Don't put scent on your boots if you're hunting on the ground. I had a deer trail me in one time. Try shooting at deer head on from ground level, no way to draw, & no shot even if you somehow made it.

Even with rut time scents, some are better than others, but I think it still helps to use different brands. You never know which scent is going to peak a particular deer's interest.

The best advice that I can give is wear rubber boots when hunting and hanging stands. Also use gloves when putting in tree steps. You wouldn't believe the increase in close encounters when you switch to these tactics. Also and most important; try not to hunt the stand when the wind is wrong. Remember; big bucks don't forget! Good luck this year...it is getting close!
