Chequamegon smallies?

Recommended Posts

Havent fished for them for sometime, but most smallies this time of year are holding off in deeper water around available structure in the bay near Ashland and Washburn. Sucker minnows on a jig will work for the most part.

Thanks for the info Jim. Do you fish them early. I've heard this time of year, focus on the weed beds and the breakwall. Tough part is finding the weed beds in that big body of water. (I've only been up in June and not much shows up on the depthfinder) Thanks again.

I really dont fish smallies that much, a few times a year and catch the occasional one, two, three, four, etc while trolling for walleyes.

The weed beds arent too hard to find off the breakwall in Ashland. That would be my first spot to go, off the reef behind the breakwall. If you have a gps w/ mapping it should be easy to locate and even if you just have a regular map its not to hard to find. These spots get some pressure, but it seems after September not a lot of people are out.

All weedbeds now are pronounced and you can easily see them on your finder. Try Long Island too if you can, another good spot off the lighthouse.

JKH431,
No I havn't. Musky fishing has gotten into my blood the last few years, especially in the fall. Can only do so many trips, then stay local. If only I could take Aug., Sep. and Oct. off just to fish. But then I'ld be single too. No good. Looks like I won't be back to the bay till next June.

Thanks for the info and let me know how you do!
