bhs91
I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 127,000 miles on it. Recently there has been a rattling noise in the transmission(i think) that comes during lower speeds. When i am accelerating, nothing, but when I get up to speed 30-40 mph and stay at that speed just cruising through town, there will be some rattling down there. If I hit the gas and accelerate, nothing. any ideas? Thanks,BHS
Jeremy airjer W
Broken catalytic converter. When the vehicle is cold smack the cat with your fist or rubber mallet, I'm sure you will hear the same noise. You could probably hear the same noise by raising the RPM's in park also. bhs91
Do i need to get this replaced? If so what is the cost of such a thing? Thanks,BHS
Jeremy airjer W
If the broken pieces end up plugging the exhaust your vehicle will have no power! They start at around a couple hundred dollars and go up from there. I would NOT recommend a universal fit. I direct fit is usually more user friendly and maintains the original integrity of the exhaust system if future repairs are needed.
deadeye
airjer is right about that. They will cause other problems if left in the car for too long. If you do it your self, the direct fit ones are the way to go and will last longer. Otherwise, if you take it to a exhaust shop, they can cut it out and weld one in place for much less. It just depends on what the budget is. I worked at Exhaust Pros for a while on the weekends and we did a ton of them cutting out and welding it in, and the life expextancy was 5-6 years for one welded in (mostly because the pipe in front or behind would rust out and the cat would be fine). The direct fit ones last much longer, as the pipe is new, it just took us a little longer to do it.
