I'm taking a trip to the Brule later on this month for some steelhead and browns in the Brule. I've never fished this river and I've never actually caught a steelhead for that matter. Its one of those fish I have to cross off my list before I die.

I'm going to be fly fishing and was wondering if anyone can give any advice on bait or areas that might be productive.

Thanks in advance for any helpful info...

can't say i'm experienced in the whole catching part of steelhead fishing, but i was up on the brule this spring on the tail end of the steelhead run.....

talked to a guy who guides on the river and he mentioned that big stonefly nymphs work well (at least in the spring).... also saw many people drifting brightly colored egg patterns....

most people were fishing the slack water behind the bends in the river with lots of weight

i'd check in on the fly fishing forum, cuz there's lots of steelheaders over that way if you are looking for advice.....

good luck

The end of August might be a little bit early to hit the bulk of the steelhead run but the weather this week looks like **** with cold temps and rain so who knows (I saw a pair of kings in a local river today). You will certainly be in time for the browns as well as some salmon potential. While yarn flies are a Brule standby I'd start with stoneflies and buggers since there won't really be too many real eggs floating around the river by then. You'd be surprised how small a fly these beasts will pick up. Last fall I was getting browns, steelies and a few cohos on #14 hare's ears. The other thing worth trying is a BIG popper or mouse on slow water after dark for the browns. They sound like a toilet flushing when they hit the things.

Lota Lota...

Hey Guys-
I just wanted to bump this up to the top cuz I'm meeting my folks and camping at the Brule next week (Wed Aug 18). I'm wondering if anyone has been there lately and can point me in the right direction. I've tried fishing the brule 3 times in spring for steelhead and still haven't pulled a fish out that river. I would like to see if I can hook a brown next week and would appreciate any info/tips anyone can share. I'll be bringing both a flyrod and spinning gear and plan on doing some night fishing. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer and I'd be glad to share some pointers from the Grand Rapids area or the BWCAW where I've been doing some guiding. Tightlines!

RedHooks, don't forget the Mepps - they can
be deadly if there are fish in the stream...
quarter downstream on your casts and don't
forget the riffles and shallow water...the
spinners will be good until the water really
cools down...easy to fish and effective....
