apostle islands bite

Recommended Posts

Went out Last Friday evening and Sat with my wife and kids. We did really well. Didn't find any salmon, but the laker bite was awesome. On Saturday AM, we picked up 13. Had a triple on at one point, with the weights going 7, 8 and 13 pounds - released them all, after quite a mess getting all three in. We only kept fish under 25" - we were looking for the eaters.
Best baits were glow and chartruse marshmellows behind dodgers, as well as H2Omellon spoons. A lot of guys were pounding the bottom, but I fished suspended water from 45 to 77 feet. The 13 lb laker came at 45 feet in 150 feet of water.

Sounds like a great time! Very good!
I see the BWCA outing on the big pond was a success as well. I would love to try Superior some time. I think the scenery would be a nice change from L Michigan's, you know the Apostles and such. I've never been up there yet.
Are lakers the mainstay of fish that are caught? Are walleye mixed in to the bag? I do know the bay contains lots of walleyes, but are you guys hooking up with any walleyes in the "open water"? I've heard of some guys catching some pretty big eyes while trout and salmon fishing.

Thanks again for the report!

CIBL:
Yep, lakers are the mainstay on this end. Occasionally, you can get into pockets of salmon, and a few browns, but its usually lakers - and if you get in the right spot, you can get some nice red fins, or stocked fish with nice lean orange meat.
Lots of guys who head out of Superior and troll the South shore have been able to zero on the walleyes, but I haven't been able to figure that one out.
You'd really enjoy the Apostles. Its a beautiful area, but I drove 20 miles out this past weekend to get to where the fish were. The lake was flat calm, so I didn't mind.
