NW WI ceded territory spearing info?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how to obtain this springs and past years spearing info (# of fish taken per species, per lake & the size)? From my understanding the lakes declared this year were Yellow, Devils, Middle & Big McKenzie. The Lbs per species is the only info I can find but it seems like it must be public to some extent because there are quotas, correct? Do the lake associations get reports @ there meetings? To all you property owners on affected lakes, have an options besides lowering bag limits been discussed? Seems lke it would be cheaper to write a check for the amount the tribes benefit rather than just fueling resources to "sustainable harvest" surveys and restocking efforts!

Luck bites less often on these lakes & it would be great to get more info!!!

The walleye population in our lake has gone from 16.8 adult walleye in 1981 to 3.4 adults in 1996 when I asked what they found for a population after they checked last fall, I was told "many lakes are in the two county area are between 1.0-2.0 adults per acre" but not what the actual numbers were. I don't have alot of faith that the present practices are ecologically sound. luckbites, I contacted our area fisheries manager for this information I would one-just-like-silly-me-u-me that yours would have the information that you are looking for as well.

Thanks for the info everyone! One way to voice your disapproval of the current spearing/treaty rights is to vote @ www.wisconsinoutdoornews.com in there survey on the home page. The issue at hand is whether tribal spearing should be reduce as a concession to new legislation on gaming. Sportmen have recently rallied by voting YES. This survey will not change the current "rights" but at least it will not give law makers the impression that nothing needs to be done if we can get enough YES votes.

I understand Walley guys theory but think it's just a matter of time before the tribes see the same thing on this body of water and decides to fill a larger % of their quota from your lake. There's not much cover for the walleyes to hide in when there spawning in the rocks @ night and the tripods of million candlelight bulbs look them in the eyes...

Hey Dan - did you happen to notice/remeber how many muskies were taken? When you say "local paper" do you mean the Burnet Sentinel? I'll do a little more research and see if I can't update this thread with the info

In general I am against any situation where one group of individuals lives by a different set of laws and rules than another. That being said, the walleye fishing on the lake where I have my cabin is as good as it has ever been. I think it has improved greatly from compared to when no spearing was taking place. My theory on why this has happened is that BOTH the DNR and the tribe stock the lake with walleyes since the tribe starting spearing the lake.

The lake is very fertile and weedy and a good percentage of any stocking reaches a decent size due to abundant food and cover. This is probably not true of all lakes in the ceded territory however.
