Gas fireplace

Boss Hogg

Question

In my cabin I have a gas fireplace with the artifical logs. It is in use the year around. 12 to 15 years now. The flame was always a nice blue flame. Yesterday, for some unknown reason, the flame went to yellow and orange. No more blue. Does the burner need a good cleaning with a steel brush, or is it more indepth than that? The unit is supplied by an "atomic bomb" size LP tank 100 feet away. Any recomendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is an air shutter that you can adjust. The more you open it the bluer the flame. It could have vibrated open. Did you like the blue flame? Typically you want the flame more yellow for a more realistic look.

Typically the air shutter is below the firebox by the valve. It should show it in the installation manual. If the air shutter is closed too much you will notice some sooting on the logs and glass.

When burning properly, your flame should be blue with little yellow fingertips. Buring Yellow/orange means it's rich. Apart from the color, do the flames look the same? I ask this as many times in low pressure burners the burner holes themselves can become slightly plugged causing restriction.

This is not a major deal. A small drill bit and a few minutes roto-rootering out the burner may be your fix.
