WI. River, Moon Dam=Quanity and sometime Quality

Recommended Posts

Fished the River below Moon Dam tonight. The current was slow due to the efforts to fill the Big Eau Pleine resevoir. Elsewhere on the WI. river the water is high and some launches are submerged. The Dubay launch is completly under water at this time.
Fishing was fast, with many smaller fish taken. If you like "numbers", give it a whirl if in the area.

Otto, yes you can. Be careful motoring out from the launch due to shallow water and avoid the submerged point of rocks that extend out straight from the launch, if you've been there you'll know the ones I mean. Trim the motor up untill you get atleast 15-20yds from the launch. The launch is a mutha farker if you dont have 4wd. Steep and constructed of concrete slabs laid and spaced out about 1' apart, your tires will be SMOKING if your boat has a little weight to it!
I fished on the S side about 40yds from the small island. A deep 17-18' hole is there, I moved slightly S of that where it comes up quick to 9-10 fow. Water temp was at 37-38 degrees. Clean bottom so snags weren't bad at all. One line either slip bobbered or hung over the side of the boat baited with a fathead. One line casted with an 1/8oz jig, SMALL rubber grub or tube for a larger profile and to cover some hook, and a fathead through the lips. At times 2 lines were too much to handle! As you know if you've fished the river in the past, lots of quanity hard to find quality. But if your catching lots of fish, who cares.
Moon is the only dam that's safely fishable right now, as I said in my other post, the Eau Pleine has darn near dryed up in the last few years so the gates at Moon were barely open.
Good luck and maybe I'll see you out there. I may head to Depere also for a day, but Moon is tenativly being planned as well. Look for an alumacraft boat and a guy catching fish! grin.gif What day are you planning on heading out?
PS: Just got off the phone with Jim Lee the Outdoor Editer of The Wausau Daily Herald sports section. I'll be stopping in to see him this afternoon to drop off some pictures of my 13.8 lb walleye. Pics should hopefully be in this Sundays outdoor section. I've shot geese with Jim, it'd be nice to get him out in the boat too! smile.gif
