Line Wraps Around Transducer

Boss Hogg

Recommended Posts

How many of you have had your line wrap around the transducer that resulted in loosing the fish. It has happened to me a few times, so I try to keep it in the hole and not below the bottom of the ice. The best thing is to get it out, but things happen so fast at times you really don't have time.

If any one has any suggestions, lets hear them.

I try to keep my transducer as close to the edge of the hole as possible. It's easier to do this if the transducer hangs in the hole by the cord or a transducer arm instead of hanging under a float, but you can still get it close to the edge of the hole even if using a float.

Also, try not to let the transducer hang below the bottom of the ice.

After that, I just try to play the fish away from the transducer, or pull the transducer out of the water if necessary.

I'm not a big fan of drilling an extra hole just for the transducer because I like to move around a lot and just don't want to spend the time drilling extra holes.

Granted we dont get as much ice out east as other areas but heres a few things I do.

First off, I only drill one hole for fishing and the transducer as im typically moving alot.

I see alot of guys with the ducer way too far down the hole even below the bottom of the ice. This is not needed. Even if the transducer is against the side of the ice it can be up a few inches from the bottom and still give you a complete readout. Be carefull the transducer isnt leaning against the side of the hole as that will tilt the beam and give you an inaccurate readout.

Most of the time I only keep my transducer a few inches into the water but more centered in the hole. By keeping my rod tip a bit closer to the ice and off to the side I almost never have a fish get wrapped up. I usually set my transducer a tad left and forward of center in the hole. When fighting a fish If I keep my rod-tip right and more towards me compaired to the hole I rarely have a problem getting wrapped. As the ice thickens you'll need to lower the transducer in the hole. Play with this setting and you'll see you can get a full readout up a ways from the bottom of the ice.

I still do flip the unit aside when I hook a bigger fish as to eliminate the potential problem. Plus I only fish a 6 inch hole and bigger fish along with a transducer can fill a hole quickly... smile

I'm with PerchJerker on this.I run a dual transducer,so I let just the transducer itself hang below the ice.If I feel that it's a really big fish,I pull the transducer.I haven't ran a float for 10 years or more and get along just fine.

Take two 1/2" electic conduit 8" long with 90 degree elbo in between thread ducer cable through it. Set vex on the conduit keep it from moving. the other end keeps cable next to edge of ice. less of a chance for line wrapping around cable when snug up against edge of hole. No need for foam floatie just use stopper against conduit

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
