Cold Clatter

Recommended Posts

I've got an '01 Sequoia 4.7L with about 80K on it. I've noticed that on cold starts, there is a clatter/ticking noise coming from the engine compartment. The noise is louder on colder days. It goes away as soon as the engine is warmed up and doesn't seem to affect performace.

Is this something to worry about?

Do you notice it at idle or does it only do it during acceleration. At idle its probably a little lifter noise. Beleive it or not I'm not really sure how they have those setup (hydralic or adjustable). If it only does it during acceleration it is probably piston slap which there is no cure for and is perfectly harmless. I have never owned an "import" that has not had piston slap in the cold, Except for the new Tundra!

If I was betting in Vegas, I would put money on hydraulic.

I would say no.

I am on the boarder about engine flushes during an oil change to cure a tick, but Ralph I assume the oil has been changed?

If it is not a piston slap like airjer brought up (not an issue at all), it might be worth an oil change if you are close to needing one and make sure you are using winter weight oil.

Short of that, I would say normal combustion engine Minnesota winter time start up tick grin

If you have a plug in (block heater), try plugging it in and seeing if the noise stops. Keeps things warm. If you park outside the tick can be normal.

If it seems to get worse, I would bring it in and have it checked out.

Good luck!

If it happens only when its cold, just after start up I wouldnt worry about it. just about all cars with hydraulic lifters will make a little noise untill the oil gets warmed up a bit and makes it up there.
