Lowrance LCX-28C HD or HDS 7?

I'm kind of leaning towards this one for the boat and wondered if anyone has this model and if so, what's your thoughts on it.

I was talking to a friend from work and he told me the HD models are new this year and although he thought they looked really nice, he said he'd shy away from them since they are new and wait until he heard more about them in case they have problems.

I currently have the 334 with an internal antenna and am constantly losing possition, that's why I'm leaning towards the external antenna. I'd like to mount the 334 in the front of the boat and use the 28 for the main locator.

Insights is a base map (ie. preloaded into the unit before you buy it). If you don't have a map chip in the unit it will show the Insights map, if you have a map chip in it will show the map chip data.

They will mark your bait and your fish if you are in the transducer cone. The problem with a boat and open water is that you usually are not in the transducer cone. But if you are vertically jigging or livebait rigging and have your bait in the cone it will easily mark it and display it on the unit.

Bigger screens are great, especially if you run them in split screen mode, and if you have room for them in your boat. For me, the larger screen is a bigger benefit for the map data than it is for the sonar display.

one more ?? my question on the lake chip is i like the map design that it shows on the HSOforum as in the 3-d effect of the lake bottom. when i install a chip for minnesota will the display still be that 3d effect or just a basemap with the contour lines of the depth changes?

I'm not sure, but my best guess is the map chip will not display in 3-d.
