Fish Trap Guide Question

Josher

Recommended Posts

I just got a Fish Trap Guide for Christmas. I'm wondering what people that have one think of them. Also, if you have another portable that is around $350 or less that you would suggest instead fo the FTG, let me know.

Also, I have not opened the box yet, but I was told this house has a bench seat instead of the swivel seats. I'm not sure I like that since I'll be alone most of the time. Does anyone have a bench seat? Does it effect how much they can pack in the sled? Can I switch it over to swivel seats?

Thanks, any help or thoughts are greatly apprecaited. I'll be heading out on the ice in about 4 days, so I need to make the call to set it up or get something different in the next couple days.

Bench seats when folded down will be a lot lower compared to boat style seats when transporting the shanty. I have seen some shanties with boat seats that barely fit into a pickup with a topper on it. Something to think about....

My buddy ran into the same problem a few months ago. We found out that some stores did not sell all of their guides and stored them over the summer and were waiting to put them up for sale this year. we called in time to get one before they put it up for sale again so he was able to get last years model for this years price. It worked out really well.

Good luck.

The best thing to do is go to a store, look everything over real good and then make your decision. The seats will be a personal preference thing so try the bench on a floor model Guide, then check out a Yukon (more money & bigger), a Trekker DLX (a little more $ w/ good bucket seats), or even a Team Wild (about the same price w/ bench also). I think the "G" stores have all but the Team Wild. I would think you could buy a seat kit from previous year's models and convert the Guide if you decided against the bench.

When I bought mine, I probably spent at least an hour comparing everything. I didn't chose the Guide but would probably be just as happy if I did.

I take out the seat and use a foldout summer style chair with armrests and pockets for stuff...I put a crossbar between the 2 lower bars and dangle my aqua view from that,.....I can lean back in comfort, watch the fish on t.v. and wiggle my bait accordingly...God ,,, am I lazy or what????

Nice call Catflisher. I'm heading out on Tuesday to give it a try. Not sure if I'll like the bench or not. I like the bag chair idea though. While I like being mobile...comfort is just as important to me...which leads to lazy...so I'm with ya!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
