Ipod music to external hard drive

I am barely computer illiterate but, thinking ahead I bought a 30 gig external hard drive when I bought a new cumputer a few months ago. I want to save my itunes music library onto the drive in case my computer ever crashes. Can I do this and still keep my itunes library on my computer. did I do myself any favors?

I would say it should be as easy as right clicking on you Ipod file in your computer, copying the file (or dragging it if you can) to the external hard drive file.

Do not move it, just copy it that drive.
