Aerate or Power Rake

If your turf is thick, and you have the tendency to cut it after it's gotten too long, and just leave the grass there, more than likely you're going to have some thicker thatch.

If your grass is thin and you're religious about mowing weekly at a height of 2.5"+, then you most likely don't have a thatch problem.

If you live in a sandier soil, you're most likely not going to see alot of benefit from aerating.

If you have a very heavy clay soil, where you can see cracks in the soil when it gets real dry out, then you MIGHT see some benefit from aerating, but the only way you're going to get long term benefits from aerating is if you so some soil modifications as well.
