Saltwater Lures

Any of y'all (yeah I'm stuck in Houston so I decided I better speak like the locals) ever use salt water lures for 'skis? I've been here for a week for work and have walked all the aisles of the two local BPS stores and have found that there are many similarities between their stuff and stuff we use. Many lures made to troll at extremely high speeds and for the most part, fairly inexpensive. I'm thinking of bringing a grab bag back to try up nort.

I always wondered how some of the billfish plastics would work for 'skis. A fish around here probably has never seen one before. They are made for trolling though, so I wonder how well they'd do in terms of cast distance.

I think most of the crankbaits for sure are castable. The jigs seem really cool (and cheap - $3-$7). Also they have plastics - most are long and skinny like eels, but because of the high speed trolling they do the have significant weight in them so I think you'd be okay casting them. Again the price is decent - the ones I looked at are 2 for $17. I'm going to pick up a for sure. I'm not sure the exact rules for naming products on here so I'll hold off unless Cjac give me the okay. It also seems like they have more leader components and options as well.

I'm going to try to get to the store and pick some up tonight - if I can figure out how to post photos I'll snap a few with the phone to show you what I'm talking about.

I was in Fiji on my honeymoon and we went out pitching huge poppers (yozuri I think) over reefs for Giant Trevally. I don't kow a lot about Musky fishing but I bet they would work (maybe you guys already use them). It was a lot of work jerking them in and trying not to fall out of the boat in the swells. I suggested to the guy that he mix in prop baits. He said there aren't any that are wired through (those GT make saw dust ut of lures). That's when I told him about the stuff you guys throw.

We'll see if I'm capable of posting images. If so this is the 2 pack of bonefish made for high speed salty trolling. I figured its worth trying them for 'skis. Also there is enough internal weight so they should be pretty castable. The pricepoint is decent too - $17 for the package - I think that's about what 1 eel costs. I kep my hand in the picture to give some perspective on the size. I picked up some peacock bass topwaters as well - not that I need more stuff - just thought I'd try to show them something they haven't seen before.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
