Great start to 2008 with pics!

Normally I start my season up on the Rainy River as soon as it opens up. This year, I started a little earlier yet, and have been fishing the Mississippi River down south.

One of my highlights was my first ever Flathead catfish. I got it on a jig and minnow in a deep hole on a light walleye rig. It put up a great fight, and makes me want to catch a bigger one (say one of those 40 or 50 pounders).

My biggest walleye to date was about 8 pounds, but my boat partners have been the ones landing the hogs! Steve Jonesi fished with me last Friday, and landed a 30 x 18 walleye that weighed close to 12 pounds. He also caught a 10 pounder that day (both fish eclipsed his prior personal best), and friend Matt Holbrook caught a 9 pounder a few days before.

The river is fickle...good one day, and poor the next. We've been getting most of our fish on the jig and minnow, but some on plastics as well.

Thought you guys might enjoy some pics...

And last but not least....the Kitty!

Wow!! Jonesi's walleye is a freakin' tank!!

I'm surprised your PB walleye is an 8 pounder. But thats the way it works sometimes, always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

But I'd rather have it that way in my boat. When I take someone out fishing, I'd rather have them catch the big one than me.

Congrats on some nice fish! Sure wish I had the cash to pick up your old Ranger, what a beautiful boat!

Chris,

When I said "best I've been able to do was an 8 pounder", I meant so far this year! Haven't got one yet quite as big as Steve's, but many, many in-between. Landed a couple that were actually longer than Steve's over the years, but not near the girth. Those fat ones really weigh up. And yeah, I'm with ya..perfectly content to see someone else catch the big ones. Even though this was a "fun trip", as long as I'm running the boat, I kinda figure it's my job.

I'm headed down tomorrow to fish with a friend in HIS boat. Maybe tomorrow will be my turn...

Ahhhhh... Big difference. \:\)

I was scratching my head thinking there is no way, but some guys run into that kind of luck where they just can't break that barrier.

Good Luck to ya!

Chris,

You guys chomping for the sturgeon run yet (haha)? When you guys headed up?

We're getting pretty close...hopefully I'll be headed up this coming week.

Jamison...give me a shout some time. You fish Mille Lacs and Gull quite a bit, don't you? Best time for me to get out is early in the year...April, May, June. Once the musky season hits, things get kind of tough.

I am chomping at the bit but I'm not going to make it up there this year. \:\( It sucks to take a spring off but they'll be there next year.

Have fun up there.

BTW... May (late) & June are primetime for the flatheads. ;\)

Yes, I fish Mille Lacs in June and in the fall and usually start to venture to Gull in September.

If you have a chance, drop me a few dates in June and we'll see what happens. Otherwise, maybe we could do "dual trip" this fall on Mille Lacs for 'skies and 'eyes during the moonlit hours of evening.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
