Best pontoon rod holders?

Bless grandpa's heart when he got us a fishing pontoon! Grandpa passed away a couple weeks ago and we will miss him, but he wanted us to open water fish more and we have to get Grandma all ready to go with us. But, not being used to fishing out of a pontoon, I need some help in finding the best type of rod holder to get for the pontoon????!!!!! Grandma and the girls have about as much hang on to a pole and fish patience as I have pockets full of gold, so I know holders are going to be needed. What do you suggest? Thanks a bunch in advance!

Sorry to hear about your loss. Not an expert by any means in this but you might be able to rig up some of your own using pvc pipe, don't know what style of fishing your looking at, but if thinking all the lines of bobber fishing, I'd go out and get a 12 foot piece of 6" or 4" pvc, cut it into 3 footers or whatever height would work to set them from the floor to the top of the rail, make a cut or slit wide enough for the reel to slide in, then just mount them with some sort of zip ties or smaller bungies. I'd mount them vertical, unless your thinking of trolling then this just disregard this idea. Might be cheaper than buying the expensive setups.

Im sorry to hear about Grandpa, thats never good news. Hes in my prayers.

Would you be able to just mount some down rigger brackes on the rails of the pontoon? What brand of pontoon did you get? im sure there is something out there for this

On my old one, I have the white rocket launcher tubes to simply "hold" the rods when not in use. I have them on the back rails.

For true "rod holders" I have a few of the Scotty models on pontoon, and many on our boat, but if I was doing it again I think I would get the Cabelas 360HT (I think that is the model name). They have rail mounts so placing them is easy. They also a "3 gang" model that might work nice if you have several people and they can point in different directions but all be located in a common area.

Sorry to hear of your Grandpa's passing, but you can bet he is proud you are continuing his traditions!

Thanks. Yes, it has rails. I was thinking along the rail mount type for still fishing mostly, but also one sturdy enough for a drift or slow troll. I am just used to fishing in a boat, but with the pontoon, the whole family will be out, so why not have the lines out at times trying for panfish or bullheads with the kids and stuff.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
