Good idea with the window tape. Flashings work as well.

I wouldn't go as far as saying cement board is the best just yet, let alone a paint that is fairly new. Neither have been out long enough.

If someone wants the old lap look and wants to paint, cement board is what to get. I wouldn't through the Hardie name around too much though.

We have used chaulk on the joints and used a piece of tar paper behind the joint for keeping water out. I believe they are inner changable. But I would definately say hardie board is the way to go. Not a huge fan of vinyl because the paint likes fade away, and ive seen it shatter under harsh conditions. (of course that was when a frozen tennis ball was shot at it with a hockey stick haha)
