Trimming a window out!!!!!!!!! How to with pics!!!!!!!1

I have fun with the camera a couple nights ago and I figure I would share what I did from start to finish. Some people might be doing this stuff right now and every thing helps when finishing one’s basement.

Here we go again. LOL!

First level out your bottom with shims

Then the top

FRqMk4k5lf9B9pyjGkTfWvagMZMDpvPm0300.jpg

Here is how I like to shim out. Cut shims untill they are level on the back and front sides. Flip shims around to keep the correct distance from base board.

Run your level on the inside and outside out the shims before you go further.

Start ripping down your inside trim.

Install the inside trim and check it for level before you install.

Install

At this point, I have to install the ledge board.

Ifigure I would show the notch I have to cut to fit my window, on the top trim board

Measure the distance between the top and bottom board for the measurment of the side boards.

Install side boards. I install the left one for some reason first. If the side are level, no need for shims. Just nail.

Now comes some idea's I have to true up your side boards. In a case where the edge is not an issue, use a flat head screw driver to flush up boards with window.

Notice gap at left top of image.

After slight adjust.

AkzE7ZvyTjN9gum70dmrh4I8m8GVkGUi0300.jpg

Now for bottom or top board adjust. Notice gap on right side of trim image.

I use wood shim's to correct this issue. I measure the correct length of shim needed and place another under striking area to prevent damage to ledge board.

Issue corrected.

Now I will nail trim face board. I had to open window to do so. I got foggy.

Ready to start the outside casing trim.

The first trim. Again, I start from the left and work right. I am right handed and do not know why I do this. I worked well for me.

A little further on trim. I start from left, head to the top and come down on the right and finish the bottom.

The end finish.

That's one way.....Looks good.

For constructive critisism, you could have left a smaller reveal on the window with the trim boards, insulated inbetween that and the framing, and then you could have avoided the small trim on the bottom. You also might have been able to have casing on the one side also. Hard to see from the pic.

Overall, pretty good job though. \:\)

Roofer, you brought it up.

Well, maybe not.

I was going to single face foam tape between the window and the trim board, but I ran a small bead of silicon on the back edge of the top, bottom and side boards. I skipped handling the camera at that part and did not add that in. I noticed that today at work.

I did case the one area, just ripped down trim to fit. I took some new images.

Is this the casing you where talking about? This was a weird window to do.

If I am doing something wrong, I would really like to know. I have 3 more to do.

Thanks

I was talking about the bottom trim piece, not the jamb. I'm no expert, but have seen some done, and done a few myself on our jobs. That corner looks tough. That wall should have been over a few more inches to make it look right. For what you had to work with, I think it looks real good!

I never meant that anything was wrong. Like I said, it looks good to me. \:\)

I will be doing the ones on my house soon, being I put in all new windows. I will have to take a few pics when I get to it.

Oh ya, I have my builder/architect to blame for that one.

I had to jog the stud wall out 3 some inch’s to clear the sewer ejection pump lid on the other side of the wall. Great place to put a window, with a future wall to hind the ejection pump and tubes.

Thanks
