Color vs. Black and White Locators

lawman

Question

I have a very good Lowrance X-65 on my 7 yr old boat. I can't say that I have ever had trouble with it but would like to hear the benefits of using this unit as my secondary finder. I would then buy a color unit to use on the dash to locate suspended baitfish. Is this color thing just hype?

With color units it is easier to distinguish between signal strength levels because our brains can process color information easier and quicker than shades of gray. Because of this there seems to generally be a quicker learning curve in understanding what the sonar unit is showing. If you are just going to look for suspended baitfish with the color unit you are not using it to its full potential. It's benefits are when interpreting the bottom or fish near the bottom.
