i have fished smallies in the bay several times from a boat. two of us are coming up this weekend to try the ice. we are looking mainly for trout, splake and maybe smallies and whitefish. we have sleds for transport. any recommendations for a good area to concentrate on?

p.s. jim h. what kind/color shacks do you have? grin.gifj/k

For splake, browns, and coho.. I would concentrait from Houghton Point to Bayfield or somewhere inbetween.. 15 to 40 FOW, 30 to 40 seeming to be key off the Onion and Sioux.. 15 to 30 near mainland points and such from Houghton to Bayfield. I know this seems vague, but in all seriousness, anywhere can be good one day to the next.. I structure fish more then anything.. Points and shoreline flats that drop quickly into deep water.

Whitefish, I would stay near the Onion river area, off the Bayfield public boat launch, or the west side of Basswood Island right now.. 50 to 70 FOW... Also, some good whitefish catches coming from deeper water too.. 120 FOW to 140 FOW off the Madeline Island side, straight west, out from the Ferry Dock..These fish are littered throughout the bay and main lake right now, you may find them anywhere, but these areas hold good concentrations of them.

Smallies are down in near Ashland.. Look to channel edges leading into and out of Ashland..

And my shacks? I dont use em.. \:\)

thanks jim, i really appreciate the info. now i don't feel like i am going on the bay fishing blind. your info is not vague at all, i'm sure it will be a great help! we will be able to move around so thanks for the reference points! i hope to see you out there. i will be in a black portable "the winnie". it would be cool to talk with a genuine 't.v.' star grin.gif. by the way, great job on the gillespie show.
