spearfish canyon

We are going to do a family vacation to a cabin in mid July. I have a six year old that would love to catch at least one trout. I have fly fished once in my life so any advice for me would be great. As far as my son goes I will probably have to rig up his spinning real with some ultra light line. Is there any lures/bait that he should try. And what is the best technique for a kid to use. Thanks

I am currently going to school is spearfish and don't even own a fly rod. I think you could rig up a spinning rod w/ a mepps or panther martin and catch at least 1 . Also, there are a couple pulloff points through spearfish canyon where you can fish. I would recommend the pulloffs closer to savoy and cheyenne crossings.

Another option: If you have time i would suggest a trip to Iron creek lake. Good shore fishing can be had with spoons/spinners/ and even crawlers.

I think the cabin we are going to rent is between the cheyenne crossing store and Yates pond. Are you familiar with that area? The only trout fishing we have around here is the traveling trout pond that is at the Boat sports and travel show every year.
