ran down to the "bog" again this snowy, gray day once again, knowing the pics lacked "punch"..oh well, many birders from all over were on the roads and made for good conversation, one guy from the state of Washington,a couple from Eden Prairie,a women birder from Hoyt Lakes...we just shared info on where the birds had been seen...I came across 2 more northern hawkowls on hwy #7 near the Zim sod farm area...one eagle at the intersection of hwy 133 and hwy #7...also was fortunate enough to find 2 three-toed woodpeckers(Spruce road near Meadowlands) about a thousand yards from hwy 133 pecking away for their lives! and didn't seem to care if I was taking there picture! grin.gif.....also saw 2 black backed woodpeckers but no pics(were quite close to the three-toed)....a good morning all and all! grin.gif

notice the "white markings" on the 3 toed's back?....black backed doesn't have the white markings though quite similar:

Jonny, that's WAY cool. Last year seemed to be a banner year for black-backed and three-toeds, which were popping up all over the place.

Looks like you had a good day. Those are very neat woodpeckers, and being that close to either one is a treat. I like the second pic especially, because it shows the bird in its typical habitat. Both species are confer bark peelers, not hole-drillers like most of the other woodpeckers, and in both pics you can easily see the peeled off bark.

Thanks Steve!...geesh I think I found the holy grail of 3 toed hangouts!...the trees were stripped litterally of bark(down to the reddish layer) on about 2 dozen trees(big trees) on the blue spruce Road,if a guy wants to see these 2 species of woodpeckers, they are certainly there! and by the looks of those stripped spruce, they've been there for quite awhile!....I know I'll be there again...lol!

and again, thanks guys....Ken, I agree that I can add another species to the "list", both from the bog(this 3 toed and the black-billed magpie)even though I saw the black-backed,I didn't get a photo of it!,when I get a pic,I'll add em to the list ........There was this one Birder(Nancy Jackson) from Hoyt Lakes that actually verified the species as we both saw the 3-toeds at the same place on the spruce road, she is one avid birder I must say! she knew that species in about 2 seconds!,which I certainly could never have done lol!...she explained the difference between the black-backed and the 3 toed and the similarity between the 2 birds by the mottled white on the 3 toeds back while visually looking at the bird through her swarovsky's ,another lone birder then drove up (from the cities) and he verified the 3 toed also....bird just pecked away and let me take his pic, the others just watched as I took the photos, apparently, they only spot the birds and not into the photography end of birding.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
