Older Jiffy auger blade knife sharpening

jigeye

Question

I have one of the older Jiffy auger's that has the cutting knife welded onto the flights. I have been just sharpening it with a flat file making sure to keep the cutting surface sharp and flat. One of the blades has a nick in that I can't file out. Anyone have a suggestion on how to sharpen it without grinding the blade off and rewelding? I can only think of having it milled or something.

I would suggest removing the blade and mounting a new one. The problem is that as you sharpen the blade you slowly loose length. It may not be much but it can be really noticeble on a Jiffy. I had that problem myself, as the blade got shorter it lost it's "bite".

Another thing to look at is buying a new bottom end, you can sometimes get a good deal if you call Jiffy directly and ask for a cheap replacement. If your top half is good you may be able to get the bottom for around $60.00.
