GPS for boat

Sutty

Question

Last year I used my H20C as my boat GPS and I am thinking about upgrading it. I would like to stick with a Lowrance unit (Lakemaster Chips) and want it to be just a GPS not a combo unit.

I am wondering if the GlobalMap 5200C accepts the chips and if anyone has any other suggestions.

Thanks,

Sutty

Yes, the 5200C and the 5300Ci accept map chips and are excellent units.

I know you said you wanted a gps only, but you might consider a combo unit. You can buy a combo unit without the transducer and use it as GPS only, but it could also fucntion as a backup sonar if you have a transducer for it, or you could add a transducer in the future. I just wanted to throw that idea out in case you hadn't considered it.

thats a good idea, I just don't want to drop big money on one that is big enough for the split screen to be effective, and I want to make sure I still have a functioning sonar or gps if one of my units drop.

I understand what you're saying, but I wasn't thinking of using it as a split-screen unit. I was thinking of using it as gps only ...... but still having the ability to use it as a sonar in the future if you ever need to or want to.

For example, in my boat I have multiple 332s (predecessor to the 500 series you're looking at now). They are sonar/gps combo units but I never run them in split screen mode. I run one as a sonar only, I run one as a gps only, and I run the 3rd as a sonar or as a gps depending on where it's mounted and how I'm fishing. I don't have gps antennas or transducers for every 332 head unit, but I have some backup options in case a head unit fails, so I can still have sonar OR gps (or both if I want to run split-screen).

I don't know if a setup like that fits with what you're trying to do in your boat, I just wanted to point it out as an option before you bought a gps-only unit. The way the pricing was on my 332s it didn't cost me any more money to go this route than getting individual sonar and gps. Good luck.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
