Decoy Movement Help

Howdy folks,

Just into my first year spearing here, and only been out a couple times. Just wondering...when using a decoy (not live), how much do you jig it or play with it when in the water? Are you constantly moving it, or move it for a few minutes, let sit or lightly twitch, or just dead sit it down in the hole?

I've been pretty active with mine. Haven't had any fish come through yet, so unfortunately haven't stuck anything yet either.

I might be in the wrong spots too. Mainly been concentrating on bottom structure, once in a funnel spot, and today in the corner of deeper water that went up to shallow (10ft). Should I be in bays this time of year? That's what my guts telling me.

Any help is appreciated.

Marc

Mark, go with your gut, and get in the bays. Especially early ice.

As far as moving the decoy goes, experiment. Some fish like it, most do not. In my experiences, small fish will come in fast to a moving decoy. Big fish seldom will. They prefer something setting still. Flashing that decoy every 1/2 hour or so may attract a fish thats hung up nearby but inactive.

There is alot of different ways that you can look at it.

I myself, always use a live decoy. What i mean by that, is that i have a live decoy tied to my fake decoy, so when my live decoy is swimming, the fake decoy is moving at the same time. By doing this, will allow me to have both decoys moving together, so when the fish comes in, its going to go straight for either decoy, but close to both of them.

There will be times that I go out, and will never touch my line. The reason for it is because the live decoy will be swimming and moving the fake one to attract fish into the spear hole. I don’t like to pull the line up, because the live decoy will come up like its dead, and then will not swim the correct way, until it gets back towards the bottom of the lake.

I know of guys that also have there fake decoy down on one line, and there live decoy on a different line, both down the same spear hole, but on different lines. They can move both of them when they want, or just leave the fake one alone, and let the live decoy swim.

I know some guys that will place there fake decoy down, and never touch it. It will sit there all day and never move it. I’m not sure how well it works, but they seem to get fish doing it.

Understand, there really is no right or wrong way to do it. Its whatever you think is right or what you feel you want to do. Experiment when you’re out there, to see what you think is the best way for you to do it

Good Luck

Try a big ol spoon once in a while, they work great for bringin in tulibees. I have seen guys use a golf ball painted half and half, usually red on white. Some just twist it in their fingers, and I think some hook it up too a little motor or something. grin.gif

Its kinda hard to see, but you can see that i am holding the fake decoy in my hand. I have a live tied to the middle part of that decoy, when will go down about 2 feet from the fake decoy, to the live decoy. I then tie a harness on that line, and place the live decoy on the hardness. By doing this, everythign is swimming in the water together, and you will never have to move your decoy becuase of the live decoy. More time then not, the pike will come in looking at the fake decoy, but wanting to eat the live one.

Hey Guys,

From Michigans U.P, Joined last year. Glad to see there is finally a forum devoted to spearing, so we don't have to get slammed on the open forums.

I saw the golf ball mentioned in a post. I use the Golf ball trick. Got 2 on it yesterday. Golf ball is painted half red and tied to some tip up line which is attached to a small open face reel hanging from my shack roof. It's tied off to the bail. Reeling causes the line to twist which causes the ball to spin. Sounds stupid but it works for me. I have also attached a CD above my fake decoy as a flasher. That has also worked-Things you will try when bored. I have yet to try the Bass n Spear live decoy below fake, but will before the season is over great idea!!!
