Pound Test Line on Fire Line Crystal

Just curious on all your thoughts on using fire line crystal. I used 2 lb test last year for crappies with great success, and am thinking of rigging up another spool of the 1 lb test for those extra finicky fish, when they just don't bite. Have any of you used 1 lb? Or is the chance for breaking off too great?

I used the 1lb test last year a bit and had good luck with it. I spooled it over my old mono line and still didn't fill the spool. Reel companies might have to do something for all the superlines that are on the market now. Maybe making a replacement spool that has a hole to attatch the superline and make the spool oversized to handle the small diameters.

On your 1 lb settup, did you just pull back on the drag to keep from breaking off? I'm typically just fishing crappies with it, but if say I were to hook into a 18+ inch walleye I'd be worried about that lb test. That ultra small diameter sure seemed to help on small jigs & mid winter "skittish" fish.

For sure! With the sensitivity hooksets were more or less lifting the rod tip. It handled great but it's hard "not" to set the hook hard.

I used 4 Lb. crystal on my jiggin' stick last winter. I'm probably going to bump it down to 2 Lb. test this year. It takes a beefy toothy fish to chomp through that stuff.

I've gotten 14lb Fireline snipped clean by teeth...so it may depend on where the teeth pinches the line.

I tried it last year and wasn't very impressed. The movement of the line with my bobber caused it to fray quickly. I think I spent more time tying new sections off then actually fishing
