Jigging spoon hooks

Recommended Posts

Typically jigging spoons are purchased set up with a treble hook. Some, (like the Swedish Pimple) come with a single hook you can swap out with the treble.

Some of my friends always swap out the treble for the single hook because they say you get a better hook set.

What do you use, and why?

I personally use the trebble hooks, and often times will go one step larger... I have done some testing of single hooks on small chains... very good hooking percentage with those as well.

I think its one of them things... what works best for you!... I also never use a full minnow on a spoon... always just the head or just the tail.

I've always heard that if you're tipping the spoon with bait you use the single hook, if not use the treble. I personally don't think it makes much of a difference; I always use the treble. Sometimes for panfish I'll take the hook off of the spoon and tie a 3" piece of line to the split ring and on the other end put a small jig with bait. This helps when they're being picky because they're attracted to the spoon and bite the little jig

I have always used the treble too. Interesting thought on the chain/string coming off the spoon with the hook attached to it. Something to try during the negative times. Seen them in the bait shops, just never tried them.

Thanks for the idea.

It really depends on the situation. I like forged single hooks when fishing for catfish and oftentimes panfish. Reason for catfish is that I like the larger hook gap and I feel I get a better hookset. Reason for panfish is that I don't like having to unhook a mouth full of treble everytime. However, you can use both for catfish and panfish.

For walleye I usually switch all my spoon hooks out for a treble in a size or two larger than what comes on the spoon. I'll also do that for pike. However, a few of the larger spoons already come with a good hook, but the smaller spoons have too thin of a hook and not enough beef smile.gif
