steel shot

Will be hunting in So. Dak. on public land. Looks like we have to use steel shot. Heard that certain older guns can be damaged by steel shot. Any info would be appreciated.

Yeah you have to use non-toxic on SD public lands. When they say older guns they mean the oldies. Most every 1960 and newer you would most likely be fine. The newer shot and wads have come a long way for protecting the barrels. What type of gun are you referring to when you say older guns?

one is a Smith & Wesson semi auto about 1975. The other is a older browning pump. The ones I use are Bennelli M2 and a fairly new O/U

As long as it is not a full choke you should be fine with steel, with gun of that age.

steel shot is hardest on older guns with fixed full choke barrels. it can scour other barrels too if pellets travel in the barrel out of the wad. good quality loads shouldnt be a problem though. if theres still concern about a particular gun you can always drop dollars for bismuth. safe for all barrels.
