My friend Arrowed Big buck

My freind hit a big buck at 30 yards there was some taller leafy weeds in front of the lungs when he shot. The deer ran 15yards had its mouth open then slowly walked away. He left it for 3 hours then went to look for his arrow found the arrow full of blood and found what appeared to be lung blood for the distance the deer intially ran then nothing not one more drop. The deer slowly walked up a hill about 50 yards then disappeared over the hill. Where do you think the deer was hit and why did it quit bleeding? Looked for 2 hours in dark then he went back in the morning and looked some more never found it. Just wondering if anybody has any similar situations any ideas????

Is he using expandable broadheads or fixed blade. Maybe it didn't open on contact. If the blades didnt open, and he hit it good, that deer might still have a couple hundred yards in him.

Next, I might mark the last place you found blood, and then stop looking for it. Mark about 5 spots over the blood trail and then step back and look where it points. Follow that same line past the last drop and just keep walking. Pay close attention to any grass or bedding cover in that same line or just off it. Your friends deer is down if he hit where you say he hit it.

I bought new expandables this year. I shot one of them straight out of the box into a fairly tight knockoff version of the "block" target. Only 1 blade opened.

Good luck, keep looking. big bucks don't come along all that often, give maximum effort.

I would be concerned that the deer left the area and then walked up a hill that distance. How far was it from where he shot the deer to the top of the hill. A lung shot deer shouldn't go just to far. What color was the blood and if any hair was on the arrow what color was it and what color was the tips of the hair?

To the top of the hill was only 50 yards and he was using fixed 3 blade broadheads. There was no hair at all and the blood was that orangish color. It didnt spray blood out both sides like a lung shot but the blood sure looked like lungs. We combed the whole area and no more blood the was a ten acre corn feild on the top of the hill but we searched row by row the entire corn feild and no sign. There was no foam or bubbles in the blood like a normal lung shot would indicate. That is why were not sure. Why would it just quit bleeding that quick and the way it had its mouth open he said it looked like it was going to tip over but it never studder stepped or any thing????

It could have been a low shot and the blood you found was from a leg or flesh wound. Could the color of the blood been bright red? The deer may have just flinched when the arrow hit the deer and then walked off. Why the blood stopped, who knows but it does happen. A friend of mine shot one in the shoulder last week when we were hunting and it left blood for 100+ yards and ended. Could have been a chunk of fat that plugged the hole,again, who knows. Every deer that is shot reacts different.

It didnt limp and why would it open its mouth and look like it was brathing heavy. The blood was orangish color.

Is it possible that the blood was medium red with green stomach matter mixed in to make it look orangish? A hit a little back would hit the front part of the stomach area.

Without seeing the blood its hard to tell.

My guess is it hit low. The arrow could easily have went through extremely low on the brisket and missed vitals. The same thing happened to me two years ago---hit a buck a little low and had a pass through right below the sweet spot. That buck was shot during the gun season that year and the scar showed a pass through the lowest part of the chest cavity and looked to only nick the one lung. When I hit him he hunched up and very slowly walked into the woods, exactly what you desribed.

sounds to me like a gut shot. Is there any water near?? A gut shot will almost always seak out water. Also wallk the most logical state trails for a long ways

Start looking for crows!! I guy I know shot a buck and it started raining right after, he had to back out till mid morning. Crows where the second on the scene,,,,,,coyotes where the first and eat most of the deer.(they do not eat antlers though)

Well no crows to be seen hopefully the deer ended up living.
