Ice Sonar?

The new addition in recent years of the LCD flashers are very nice. A ton of colors and they offer a lot of options. They are almost as real-time as a 3-color Vex or MarCum, you can't really tell the difference for the most part. If you already own a 67 or 68, then I would consider buying the ice kit allowing you to turn them into an ice machine.

I will continue to run a MarCum though, as I've become accustomed to those style of units and they work the best for me. However, I've used a 67 on the ice before and its not a bad unit by anymeans...

I tried converting my LMS 334 to an Ice fishing unit and didn't think the response of the signals was as fast as the flasher. I might tinker with some settings to see if I can speed up the signal but for now I will stick with my Vexilar for fishing.

One thing I really liked was using the GPS on the Ice. I also would drive around using it chip to locate the area I wanted to fish. It saves some searching for a depth/spot to fish as well as a lot of holes.

Good luck,

Corey Bechtold

I've had a x67 for two seasons and i love it the graphing feature works great and i have had NO probles with it so far. Also i mounted my handheld GPS unit on to the base via ram mount and that works great also it's nice to have GPS right there. Another thing i had a M68 and you couldn't put ur map chip into the unit so i returned it and got the x67 and an H20c with the navionics premium chip.

Hay Dawg, fellow Buffalo man, I've ice fished and boat fished (high speed transducer) with my x67c for, jeez, 3 years now. I love it, it goes on every single fishing trip I take, open water or ice. I can't imagine going back to a mechanical flasher (too noisy, battery hogs), or a flasher screen for that matter, I run graph mode all the time, they might as well sell me one without the simluated flasher mode. The battery lasts all weekend on one charge.

I've gone on and on about life with the x67c, enough that people here are sick of it, so do a search for x67c and my username back a couple years and you'll find more than you want to know. Don't believe anyone who says it "lags", it's FUD.

Works great at night. I've never worn out the bat. I've used it outside in some really cold weather and the screen hasnt froze up. You will get some serious interference during a contest, with all the vex/marcum people around. I bought the ice machine x67c and got rid of the stupid metal bar and replaced it with a the white vexilar foam float. I also have the high speed ducer in the boat. Great unit!

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
