Doel fins

I'm looking to replace the lower unit on my motor. I found one on HSOList. It has Doel fins on it. Besides cover cracks in the cav plate, what do doel fins do?

But, in my opinion, are a bandaid for a propping problem.

I know others will disagree, but that's my opinion.

Anyway, with respect to whether you should by it or not the only concern I would have is if the cavitation plate is cracked under the whale tale.
