Flies

Recently moved to the Twin Cities and have not done any fly fishing in Minnesota. Plan to try our luck in Southeastern MN tomorrow a.m. Any suggestions for flies? Do "hoppers and droppers" work here? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Tight lines (and no knots) to all!

Welcome to Minnesota and to FM!

Yep, hoppers and droppers work very well around here, and this is the time of year for them. Streams are running a little low and very clear, so hopper/dropper is a good way to go. I fished a black wet fly (sinking cricket) trailed by a size 20 green zebra midge and did very well today.

There were hoppers in the grass, just fyi.

Scuds, Pheasant tails, prince nymphs, midges, hoppers...all good flies this time of year.

Good luck! Don't forget your camera. cool.gif

ooops...forgot to add.

If you're on the right stream, you can run across the trico spinner fall in the early to mid morning. You might want to have some size 20-22 trico spinners handy just in case.

Hoppers + midges = great set-up. I'll be working it this weekend in Wisconsin.

Yes indeed. It always surprises me just how many fish will hit the dropper when the big fat hopper is right there, also.
