Diff flouro ?

Hiya

I just mentioned this in the other thread, but my main reason for using fluoro, especially for trolling leaders, is that it doesn't slice fish up nearly as badly when they roll up in the leader.

In the past I used to use singlestrand wire for trolling. It was durable but man did it slice up fish sometimes. 7-strand was even worse because it's so abrasive, plus I never trusted the crimps - seen them fail and leave a fish with a face full of hooks. No good.

I started using fluoro for trolling leaders when I wasn't around rocks a few years back. It's very fish-friendly when you're in cold water and fish roll a lot.

Still didnt' solve the problem around rocks though - the leaders got chewed up too fast and I was worried about leader failure from abrasion. So I was still using single strand when i trolled in the fall on Lake of the Woods, and was looking for another wire option.

Last season I found some 49-strand cable that's amazingly durable and soft. A little bigger diameter, but manging rocks in stained water on LoTWS, who cares? (Fish certainly don't). The stuff actually holds up better than single strand did, because it's supple enough not to kink.

OK - totally sidetracked there...heh.

Bottom line, I don't think visibility matters a whole lot unless perhaps when you're dealing with very heavily-pressured fish or clear water. Talking to som eLake St. clair guys, they feel their catch rates are better when they use long (7') fluoro leaders trolling. Most of the time though, fish that eat fluorescent orange suicks and bright green bucktails aren't line shy...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
