A catch of a life time, but not what we were looking for.

Hit Pool two from shore yesterday afternoon and evening. Started out like any other night. In the last few weeks, we have even posted a time limit on how long our stay at shore spots are before we move on and we have been hitting 3-4 spots in a night.

Last night in spot #2, we started to get a little more action than the first spot. A few little runs and allot of that bump bumps that we have heard so much about lately.

Well to make a long story short, I had to relieve my self and get a couple more cold soda's from the car. Upon my return, I see my brother in-law down by my pole and a couple of people standing around him. As any red blooded fisherman would do, I shot right down and almost killed my self on the way. Once I got back to my pole, I could see a fish covered in mud and could hear some other guy saying 30"'s. I lost a slight amount of build up when I heard that, I would of rather heard 40" plus. After a little static and confusion, I saw what it really was. With tail slightly pinched, 30 1/4" to 30 1/2 inch walleye. I have pics of it and I will post them when I get home. I let my-brother in-law take credit for it, even though he pulled her in with my rig.

Funny how a fish like this (all though nice) just isn’t nothing when you are down going for a large flat.

I think the fish had been playing around with my bait for some time. A series of thump thumps with no run got fish on hook and she came up like a log, my brother in-law stated. No fight, just zoomed in. Once on shore she put up a little struggle. All we did was measure length and got back into water so we could continue cat fishing.

Still holding my goose egg record on flats. Almost two months now.

No weight! Just length!

I brought camera to work and I am looking at right now.

It is a large fish.

Hanson's theory is right on the money about these fish. I also firmly think most of our hits and miss's are from walleyes as well.

The fish had been playing with bait for almost 20 minutes. I feel stupid, but I think it may have been on the line before I went up to car. I was chalking up to action on end of rod as live bait action, with possible fish around. Drag was set very light and clicker on, no line or drag was taken when fish was landed. I was told it was like fish was tired out. When on shore she was hard to hold on to.

My brother in-law has not had many walleyes over the years. The hundreds of trips and only a couple of few small ones. I catch most all of the walleyes and the big one up north.

He was very proud and now has a “big one” under his belt.

Thats a nice walleye but I'm not sure if I can take credit for the theory. Good friend of mine who guides cats on the Miss. P3 & P4 had stumbled onto that amazing pattern. For him, they weren't even accidental catches, he was truly targeting and patterning them with bullies. I wish I knew how many he put in his boat last year but it was at least 25 walleyes over 25" with most of the fish being 28-30". He did it again this year as well. Once the walleyes slow down for him, the flatheads turn on, both seasonally and nightly.

I truly believe that good spots on the river are good spots year round for all species of fish. Different fish just happen to use these areas at different times of the year.

Hanson,

Your friend would not happen to be the "Grizz"? grin.gif

I always thought what I have dubbed the "Hanson theory" was a creditable theory. I just had not seen any success with, untill now.

I am heading up to Pelican Lake (Breezy Point) for the next

five days and you know what will be in my bait bucket. I figure with the walleyes up their, I would have a great edge on weeding out the smaller ones and go right for the monsters

As I stated in my main post, people were around to see us catch this fish. When we arrived and casted out, we heard a couple of chuckles. After we caught it, people could not believe what they saw and they were on their cells phones calling buddies. They never asked were to get them, but I am sure they will find them.

Good fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nope. Although it would be cool to have the Griz as a fishing buddy.

Hanson Theory is fine with me. I've got some other theories as well but I don't know if the world is ready for them yet. LOL! grin.gif
