new micro reel

Another vote for Tiny 20's. A great little reel. Smooth and works great in cold weather. Ultralite Quantums are good too. But for the price you can't beat the Tiny 20. I've seen them for as low as $15 but they are typically around $25.

Good Fishin, Matt.

I bought two of Abu Garcia "Agenda Agulf" liteweights last year at Reeds in Walker. They ran $28 on sale. Really do like them. Never have any problems regardless of the temps. I use 4# on and a 8# Micro Ice by Berkley.

Instead of just swapping my ultralight spinning reels off of my summer rods onto my ice rods this year I want to break down and buy a decent micro spinning reel or two. Throw some suggestions at me please!!!

Bigguns,
Can I get these through FishingMN? I saw that post earlier but could not find them on the net? This brings me to a question for Rick I suppose...Can a person post a link for an item that FishingMN does not carry or is this still a no-no?

Tiny 20's are good, especially the drag system. I have one that's made it through two winters, still like new.......Also, Silstar EF-25 reels are a pretty good one for a little less money. Shimano AXULS reels are good too...T

Ultra light reels are fine for ice rods but they have spools that are too small causing too much line memory . Problem is that reel manufacturers make their products geared for open water fishing and the long cast, aggressive tapered spools do not work well for ice fishing applications where a lot of vertical jigging causes slack in your line.
Sometimes moving up one size in a reel will make a big difference and I tend to look for reels that have shallow but wide spools such as Daiwa's Regal Z series reels and some of the new Quantum TI series reels. They both have the wider bodied spools that help keep line memory to a minimum and plus the with the wider spool, the feet of line per turn of the handle is increased.
I still use quite a few of Silstars Vertex VX 25 and 35 series reels because they pretty much bullet proof and have a wider spool, titanium line roller and a great drag system that isn't effected by the cold. I do wrap some turbo tape on these spools to build them up and then use only 50 or so yards of my favorite line to fill them up.
It's too bad Silstar discontinued these reels. They were actually a Pinnacle Dead Bolt with a little more durability built in.
Going one size bigger in a reel isn't going to make your rig any different other than more efficient.
You can balance the set up easily by moving the reel back on the rod and if you're using a type of rod stand or setting it on a bucket, why not use the bigger reel ?
If your heart is set on an ultra light reel, try Daiwa's "Spinmatic" series. They're about $30 at Cabelas.

Gander Mountain's ultralight also has infinite anti-reverse. I just bought one for this winter to try out. I have 3 Agulfs and have never had a problem with them. Has anyone tried the mini baitcasters that Cabelas sells? I tried to get one last year but they were sold out. Good excuse to head on down there again. I wonder what they hand out on Halloween?
