hawgTime
riffleI've always had the best luck catching walleyes with a small plain (#8) treble hook when using tipups. I've never had much luck catching walleyes with any lure on a tipup, not that I haven't had bites---and maybe even more bites. The problem I've found using lures, including pimples, is that walleyes have tendence of spitting them out sooner than a plain hook. You know when fishing with tipups, you need as much time as possible, just so you can get to them and set the hook. Or is that just me? If you are going to try them, my suggestion would be to go small and use a treble on it. Better yet, forget the pimple and just use the treble.thinkCold
Guest
The pimple just works as a flasher. A similar method is using the only the pimple and not the treble hooks for perch. Tie the pimple 8 or 10 inches above the actual bait hook. For some reason it works sometimes. Its just one more thing that you can pull out of your bucket of tricks to try when nothin else works. But the procedure you explain works the same. I caught a lot of walleyes last year on the mille lacs ice using pimples and minnow. the system you described would work. Many times I jig that way with my vex. I drop the pimple and minnow down the hole and let it sit.....then watch a walleye rise off the bottom....without me even jigging it, 7 times out of ten the fish will hit it. If he didn't hit it when I let it still, A quick couple of jigs does the trick. I do know that a very active minnow makes a huge difference when doing it this way. Guest
I read an article a year or two ago about a tactic for catching walleyes that I have never heard about or tried. The author claimed they caught more walleyes on tip-ups if they put a swedish pimple/minnow combo on instead of just a minnow. I am guessing the minnow works the pimple and gives off more shine than just a plain minnie. I have jig fished with this set-up, but never tried it on a tip-up. Has anyone ever tried this method and what is your opinion on it? I have always done fairly well with just a plain minnow, but will always look for ways to improve the TIPS ARE UP percentage. Guest
I have used flutter spoons on tip-ups and had some success but I would have to agree with hawgtime, plain hooks or jigs work better. If your jigging then a pimple might be better but if your presentation is stationary more emphasis on the bait is better.Good Fishin, Matt.P.S. Keep those minnows alive too. Guest
I swear by pimples during the hard water season. Over the years they have produced more walleye and northern than all the other new fangled jigging lures combined,(perhaps with the exception of a jigging rapala, which can be equally deadly. I have slowly givin up tip-ups over the years, although I will occasionally set one while jigging an adjacent area. Think back to strike triggering basics, the pimple creates more attraction(flash), represents a larger silhouette, and slows the action of an active minnow to a pace that is "do-able" to a lazy winter walleye or pike. The downside of course, the extra drag and weight of the pimple may cause the fish to drop the bait before you can get to the tip-up, in my book a worthwhile gamble, as you most likely will find yourself attending more flags with the addition of an attractor lure to your tip-up presentation. Guest
Thanks for all the input guys. Its sounds like a tactic to try on at least one or two tip ups. I cant give up the tip up fishing and totally go to jigging for two reasons. One because I love to fish tip ups and the second because the one lake I mainly fish is a reservoir and the fish seem to prefer the setup on a tip up to that of a jigging rod. Believe me I have tried the jigging setup, but usually give it up after no action and busy with the tip ups. The other lake I fish is a natural lake and the walleye there do prefer the jigging method, as a matter-of-fact I usually leave the tip ups at home when I fish that lake. Jigging rapalas rule there, but you have to be mobile.
