Late Strutting

Stiff

Recommended Posts

I saw a long beard strutting with two hens over the weekend and thought, "Hmmm, that seems pretty late....." Pulled up and had some fun mouth calling to him for the kids. They got a kick out of seeing him gobble back.

Then this morning on the way to work I saw one strutting for a single hen... Is it just me? or does this seem really late in the year to see this activity??

I've seen birds strut out into the end of June, though agreed, we're on the tail-end of gobbling and breeding activity.

The birds we were hunting Monday morning strutted for an hour or two after they flew down from the roost in an open corn-field. They too were very willing to gobble and respond favorably to calling.

The hen that was with them? She was less interested in being chased around by the lead-tom, and even more uninterested in the 3 jakes that more than once, took matters into their own hands......errrr....wings?

One day left, I'm heading out Thursday to see if we can't get a bird for a friend.

The birds I have been working the last couple of days seem to gobble on the roost and then, are silent, they are not very receptive to calling, I thought I had them this morning but nothing, as I left the property I seen them 1/4 to the east of where I was, the tom was still strutting and he seemed to have half a dozen birds with him, I am not sure if they we jakes or hens, all I could catch was the heads moving in the tall grass. Thursday morning should be good it has to be!!! There seems to be alot of crow activity, I don't recall this much other years I guess I will have to listen to that in the future.
