Does anyone have or know of someone that will have any female black/yellow lab pups for sale? Good hunting background is a plus, but mainly looking for a companion around the house and a watch dog for the wife. One will keep her company while i'm out on the water. The other will be out fishing with me.

There's a guy just south of Owatonna who breeds Labs and trains hunting dogs. My 9 mo. old Weimaraner is there now being taught to behave. It is Windsor Kennels, and the owners name is Chris Boerger.

He has a female who gave birth to a litter of 10 about four weeks ago They are black and cute as can be. If you are interested, email me and I'll send you his phone no. and email address.

I bought my yellow lab (yellow...not buff or white) a year ago from a breeder near Owatonna in Caremont MN.
She's a great grouse hunter at 1 yr and when the other half can't come along.....one of my best fishing partners too. She's been my lucky charm on URL this year.
She's in the house with my 4 kids and behaves better than they do !! (no surprise..)
If you'd like his name # and let me know, I can email it to you.
Chris

Flyingfish-Get a yellow lab. I love my Chocolate lab but he gets to hot in the boat. That hot summer sun is hard on Chocolate & Blacks. Just my opinion!ScottS

Fishhead,

Flying fish is looking for 2 dogs of the female gender. so your question--"if he's fishing with you"-- didn't seem to make sense. If you read his post it states "The other one will be with me." I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the info. I looked at a few litters of pups and picked out a female black lab. I probably won't be getting much sleep for the next few nights. We plan on getting two. Both female. One black and the other yellow. We initially were going to get both right away, but we'll see how it goes with this one. We may wait till the end of the summer to get the second.

Clayton and Twitter, do you know the price the breeders are asking and are they bred more for show or hunting?

Fish4food do you know how old your buddy's puppys are, and what color of yellow? ie snow, ivory.....

Fishead, the missus likes fishing, but the pooch probably likes fishing more than her already. A sock on the end of the line is a good way to keep the dog (and myself) entertained.

Off to do some babysitting...........

Chris is more oriented toward hunting, altho the obedience training is a first step for either show or hunting. He emphasizes the importance of having a dog as companion.

Visit his site at www.windsorkennels.com You'll see he breeds yellow, chocolate, and black labs. He did a good job on my Weimaraner pup in a 6-week obedience program. The key now is for me to continue to work with her daily to polish and retain what she learned.

I don't know what he gets for a lab pup, but I would guess it is competitive. His are obviously AKC with an established line.

Fly Fish--

Just thought I'd put in my thoughts on the $$$ end of the puppy hunt. I picked up a "yellow" female, Jozie, from DeLoia Kennels in Duluth a little over two years ago. Price $600. Don't let that scare you. In my opinion you get what you pay for. This particular litter was bred for "hunting" and quite a bit more laid back than the lines that are bred for feild trials. My previous "yellow" female, Abbey, was purchased from the same in 1989. Price $500. I suspect I will never have a dog
again like Abbey, perfect in every way. Jozie is coming along nicely with her own personallity! I had two other doge before Abbey... Black male, Duke,..Hated kids for 4 yrs!Price $ 25. And Black male, Saddle, hated everyone for 1 yr.! Price $250.. Now I'm not a proffessional trainer but from my experience I will say that the "yellows" are a little more easier to train than the blacks or it could be that they were females??!! I'm partial to the females of the "yellow" color. Both Abbey & Jozie are "yellow" labs. Abbey was "golden" in color, Jozie is "white as snow"! Still both are considered & registered as "yellow" labs! If someone tries to sell you a registered "golden" or "buff" lab.....Run as fast as you can to the next litter! They do not exist in the AKC world! Yes there are some good dogs out there for $150-$300, but in my honest opinion, if you pay a little more you will get a little more!!! Good luck with your pup!!!

Later.... cool.gif Dugan!!!

FlyingFish,
I think I paid $500 for my yellow. She was bread for hunting, both parents were great hunters and the dam was a great companion too, to her owners, much like mine is becoming. The breeder had already had the litter on birds and fired over them at 10 weeks.
Like I said, I couldn't be happier with the dog, she's as much a part of our family as the 4 kids. It's a lot for a dog, and I agree you can get just as good a dog from the Humane Society if you're lucky and have the time to develop them. The advantage of buying from a reputable breeder is you know you're getting a dog that has the potential of being the type of dog you want(good hunter with a good nose and the natural instincts to become a bird-dog, with a good temperement...sp?)....the rest is up to us as far as giving them the attention required and the right training to suit our individual needs.
Good Luck with the new pup !
If you want the name and # number of the breeder I got Molly from just let me know.

Wanted to thank everyone again for the info. My puppy (Piper) is doing good. She hasn't got into too much trouble yet. Potty training has gone well and now makes it through the whole night. She knows what some words are, especially NO.

She is a handful and we've decided to wait untill fall to get her sister. I'll keep you updated on her progress and will probably be back with more questions.
