Trimmer string alternatives - What works?

Like many I'm sure, I'm frustrated with how often I'm stopping the trimmer to pull out more line.

I was wondering what products you recommend as more of a permanent or semi-permanent cutting alternative to the string, that can be mounted on the same "head" as an attachment. Specifically, I'm looking for it to do larger weeds, as well as to turn it on its side for some edging.

Ideas?

I gotta ask; is it a "Bump-Stop" Line feeder? As in, while it is running you can "bump" the head on the ground and it feeds out an additional segment of line. I guess the ones I have used have been like this, but I may be missing your point, too. As far as tougher line, I think you can just get tougher line or a whole different head with swinging blades, or even a fixed spinning blade. That might get the job done, but there is not much room for error anymore with that.
