open fires in LOTW area?

Recommended Posts

IS there a fire ban up there? We're heading up this weekend, and might camp one night ona n island. A fire would be useful for warmth at the projected temps.

Thanks,

Tman

LOTW is within burning ban area, as is all of Northwestern Ontario, but it appears some campfires may be allowed in DEVELOPED campgrounds with fire pits, but not on remote Crown lands... fyi...

PROVINCE BANS OUTDOOR BURNING IN NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO

News Release

DRYDEN — The Ministry of Natural Resources is imposing a Restricted Fire Zone across most of Northwestern Ontario to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires, especially brush and grassfires, that are threatening people and property.

The fire hazard is extreme because of prolonged dry conditions and strong winds. Effective at midnight, Monday, May 7, 2007 until further notice, all open burning is banned outdoors. The restrictions apply to the Ministry of Natural Resources districts of Red Lake, Kenora, Fort Frances, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, and Nipigon. The Restricted Fire Zone is also in effect in Wabakimi Provincial Park and south of the Ogoki River Basin in the Nipigon District. The exception is the far north and the northern portion of Nipigon District where no fire ban is in effect. Please contact your local ministry office to see if your area is affected.

Under the Restricted Fire Zone regulation, all burning permits are suspended and all open fires are prohibited. Campfires may be allowed at some organized campgrounds or parks that use approved fire pits and meet certain other criteria. Campers should check with the owners or operators first. Within the Restricted Fire Zone area, people can still use portable gas stoves for cooking and warmth but the public is asked to exercise extreme caution.

Ministry fire staff and conservation officers will strictly enforce the ban on open burning.

Note: Please see attached map for Restricted Fire Zone areas.
