Hermit
Need some advice on an older outboard I recently bought cheap and now know why. She'll run for about 10 seconds and then die. It's got good spark and new plugs. I took the carb off and cleaned it. Float does'nt appear to be sticking. Gas line, primer bulb and tank check out good. The water pump does'nt spit water out of the exhaust right away when it starts but after 5 seconds or so it works. Any ideas?? Coils or points? boatfixer
What do you have to do to get it restarted? Reprime? Choke? Open the throttle?
Hermit
close choke and and open throttle. She takes right off, high rpm, if I play with the choke open and closing I can keep the motor running for about 30 seconds.
Valv
Get carb apart again and clean it good, go through all the jets and needles. If it runs with choke your carburator is not clean, you might have to get a rebuild kit. Also check your fuel pump, it could be the problem too. Finlander
Replace your gas pump which is on the left side where you see the gas lines run in and out. New ones they are pretty cheap to replace and are easy to install. Also check to see if the gas lines aren't cracked and brittle. Easy and cheap to replace! Good Luck! IMO, the best money spent on older motors is to throughly go through the entire fuel system every few years. Clean fittings and check/replace the o-rings on the fuel connections, tear down and rebuild the fuel pump, check fuel hoses under the hood, and rebuild the carb(s). I've seen all the things listed above ruin what could have been a good day of fishing. The worst part was, it could have been easily avoided by doing a little work in the off season. A common problem on the OMC fittings is the o-rings in the fuel connections. If the o-ring is bad or gets knocked out of place, no fuel. Also, adding an inline fuel filter before the primer bulb is a good idea. The water pump sounds normal. Good luck.
jigglestick
I'm with finlander on this one. a good test of the fuel pump is to keep pumping the primer ball in the gas line and seel if you can keep it running that way.if you can, go get yourself a new fuel pump, or if possible, a kit to rebuild your old one.that should get you under power again.Good Luck!
