Med sized jigging spoon with dropper for crappies?

Has anyone tried using a jigging spoon (sweedish pimple, etc.) and removing the treble hook to replace it with a 4"-6" length of mono and a small ice jig with a waxie or small minnow for crappie? This is my favorite method for perch because they like 'Big & Flashy' for an attractor, but take the tiny tidbit with a small hook.

Is it too flashy for crappies? Would a longer drop line work better? If you have tried this, what were the 'test' results?

Haven't tried it on crappies but it works great for tullibees.

I've caught alot of crappies using the North land's rattle spoons (the smaller spoons).

I've used the dropper technique with the Angel Eye Spoon and the Angel Eye Jr.

I find this works best when they come up to look at the spoon but do not hit it. I then tie on a small dropper and the results are usually fantastic.

The spoon attracts them and the small offering elicits the HIT!!!

I use this technique for crappies all the time. It works really good when they are really biting because it allows you to get the bait down into the "zone" really fast. I have done this with tiny silver Swedish Pimples and Angel Eye Jrs. Works great with both. Also, it is a very good technique for finicky walleye.ScottS

The only problem that you may get is that the dropper may tangle on some other part of the spoon or if you use something like a jigging rap. it may tangle on one of the other hooks, watch the outfit as it falls and you should be ok it does work. Try and use a spoon that "angles away" and when it hits the end of the line that it settles down with the dropper being pulled behind it. I have found that a slip dropper works great for this. And if they are still shy about hitting the dropper put some sent on the dropper and it may entice them to hit.

Jigging spooon works good on Crappies...And even better on Bull Bluegills!!!

Just put a maggot or two on a treble hook and drop it down just like that. Gills love it, Crappies like it, and it also keeps the fish coming in.

Great ideas guys.

I have had great succes with jigging spoons for gills and crappies, but also switched to teardrops when they would look but not touch. The techniques sounds great, but what strength line do you use for the dropper line. I don't want to lose those URL Slabs because a hand tied dropper line broke. I use a palomar knot most of the time so I am not worried about the knot. I am thinking of trying 4lb. test but will that be to heavy??

Good Luck,

I use 4lb clear Mono 99% of the time for Crappies....Just keep the drag a little loose.

Works good for me...Hope you have the same success.
