Grandee
I have about 950 feet I want to put a hedge up to border my farm. It is a field now so no trees to contend. and is located on the south side with alot of sun and good soil. I want something that grows farely quick but looks good and is a hearty shrub--looks are important to me. Any suggestions--Thanks
Powerstroke
There are many many choices. Deciding factors might be how high you want the hedge and how much water it receives. Things like lilacs, dogwoods, forsythia, arbovitae or ornamental trees are an option too. They grow slower but require less maintenance.
fishinchicks
Check with your local Soil and Water Conservation office. They will be able to help you out with types of trees, and possibly with the planting of them. Most SWCD's also have a tree sale every year, where you can order trees or shrubs for a bit less than at your local nursery.
WaveWacker
I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket. I'd mix up some Highbush Cranberry, Red-osier dogwood maybe some lilac. If you were looking for one, I'd stick with the Highbush.
Powerstroke
Picking all of the same kind is not a bad thing. It wouldn't be a "hedge" if they weren't uniform.
