Need information on trout fishing in Brainerd area!

I recently bought a fly rod and a trout stamp and wanted to start trout fishing this year. I did some research and found out that Cory and Stoney brook, just east of Gull lake, have trout in them and wanted to make a trip up there right after the season opens on the 14th. If anybody knows about any places with trout in the Brainerd area please let me know.

Thanks.

I've walked around Stony Brook on the trout opener several times and every time it is full of suckers. I mean full of suckers. It's like a stampede moving up and downstream every time you approach the water. In many places you can cross on their backs. Pretty amazing sight for a small stream. And then there are the guys casting big treble hooks "fishing" for suckers.

I am usually there around opener for Easter and/or dock duties with the in-laws - I really enjoy trout fishing but I don't wet a line there until the sucker run is over.

If you wait it out there is some good trout water there, but it is tight quarters for a fly rod and the trout can be spooky. Probably not the best place to learn fly fishing.

There are mine pits around Crosby that have good trout populations and probably fish well early in the summer. If you can get out in a canoe or float tube you can really air out some line and work on your casting, too. Early season flyfishing for panfish is a lot of fun, too.

Good luck!

I've fished the mine pits around Crosby in May, but I fished from shore with a fly rod. I didn't catch any trout but there were some rising to flies in the middle of the lake. I did catch some monster bowfish, dog fish, with my 3 weight which were cruising the shore by the landing. They took my pheasant tail no problem! I second the canoe idea and I've heard that there are some monster northerns feeding off the trout they stock.
